If I hadn’t been browsing the personal finance blogs today, I probably wouldn’t have realized that I owed a tax payment to the IRS.
I was laid off from work earlier this year in January, and before that point, I had paid the majority of my taxes through my W-4 withholding. After I became an independent consultant, however, all that changed. I’m now earning income not subject to withholding, and since it passes a certain threshold, I must pay taxes on it.
I paid through a credit card service called “officialpayments.com.” The fee was nearly $40. I’m now going to register for the government’s free tax payment service so I don’t have to deal with this again come September 15th, when my next estimate is due.
